Ole Miss offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil was arrested for misdemeanor, domestic violence-simple assault following an incident with his step-father last week.

According to ESPN, Tunsil punched his step-father, Lindsey Miller, after he began shoving his mother, Desiree Tunsil, at the family’s Oxford, MS home on Thursday.

A source close to the family claimed that Laremy was acting in defense of his mother — “his stepfather shoved his mom and Laremy punched him. It’s as simple as that.” — but Miller claims Tunsil was the instigator, hitting him six to seven times following a verbal argument.

Head coach Hugh Freeze released the following statement in the wake of Tunsil’s arrest:

We can confirm that Laremy Tunsil turned himself in and was arrested for a misdemeanor, domestic violence-simple assault. The incident occurred Thursday night and involves Laremy defending his mother against his stepfather.

Laremy realizes he could have handled it differently, but I am proud of him for standing up for his mother and protecting his family. Laremy and his mother have also pressed charges against the stepfather. As we gather more facts, we will act and make decisions accordingly.

Prior to the incident, Tunsil was the fourth-pick in ESPN draft-analyst Todd McShay’s projected 2016 NFL Draft, despite breaking a leg and dislocating an ankle during Ole Miss’ Peach Bowl loss to TCU this past season. The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department declined a comment from TheDC, as this is still an on-going investigation.
