The District of Columbia is full of well-educated and passionate people working in government and non-profit organizations. It also has a higher proportion of blacks than any other state.
Almost half of the District’s residents identified as non-Hispanic blacks in the most recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau, and more than 55 percent of residents have at least a bachelor’s degree. According to Business Insider, that qualifies D.C. as the weirdest place in the country.
The survey from Business Insider took into account things like demographic information and economic indicators to see how far each state and D.C. are from the average. The further a state is away from the average, according to BI, the weirder it is.
The District isn’t all weird, though, because about 85 percent of its residents have computers in their homes, which is on par with the national average.
Indiana came in first as the most normal state in the country, hitting very close to average on all of the metrics. Indiana’s birth rate of 54 babies per 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 50 was just above the national average of 53.
The only measurement where Indiana was off from the national average was in the number of detached houses in the state. Seventy-two percent of Indiana’s houses do not connect to each other, making it the fifth highest in the country.
At 52 percent, Alaska had the largest proportion of men to women, making it one of only nine states with male majorities.
New York came in fourth for the weirdest state, based on the fact that more than 22 percent of its residents were born in another country.
