The National Union of Healthcare Workers announced Tuesday that its leaders voted overwhelmingly (72 percent) to endorse Senator Bernie Sanders.
This is not the first union to endorse the senator as frontrunner Hillary Clinton has struggled to gain the union support she expected, Sanders has been endorsed previously by National Nurses United and United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America.
“He’s the real thing. He’s been standing up for working Americans for decades. But no president can go it alone; it will take a bottom-up, grassroots movement to change the direction of our country. NUHW is proud to be part of that movement,” said National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) President Sal Rosselli. They like him particularly for his Medicare for all initiative.
The union has 11,000 workers in hospitals throughout California, and was founded by former SEIU members after a 2009 dispute. NUHW for months sent questionnaires to members to see who they would support. After the voting of rank-and-file leaders was tallied, only 17 percent supported Hillary Clinton for Democratic nominee.
