Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of NATO, would not speak ill of President Trump during a Wednesday interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, saying he “agrees” with POTUS that other countries do not pay their fair share in the alliance.

Wolf Blitzer first asked the NATO chief about Trump’s recent comments that NATO is “no longer obsolete.”

Stoltenberg flatly refused to rebuke Trump’s past criticisms of the organization, even offering that NATO has a lot of work to do.

“I agree with President Trump that European allies and Canada have to invest more in our collective defense,” Stoltenberg declared.

Blitzer tried to push back, eventually asking Stoltenberg if he trusted President Trump.

The secretary general refused to take the bait, explaining that he “welcome[s] his very strong message on defense spending, on burden sharing, and also on NATO’s role in fighting terrorism.”

“But do you trust him?” Blitzer pressured.

“I trust his very strong commitment to NATO, of course, because he has shown it not only in words but also in deeds,” Stoltenberg responded.
