A McDonald’s cashier gave birth to a baby and then attempted to flush the newborn down a toilet while at work in Redwood City, Cali., state prosecutors said Wednesday.

Sarah Lockner, 25, has been charged with attempted murder after sticking the newborn baby’s head down in water while flushing the toilet Sept. 4, WHDTV reported. Lockner was working a nighttime shift at McDonald’s and complaining about stomach pains to her coworkers, when she ended up going into labor and giving birth in the bathroom. A coworker entered the bathroom to find blood on the bathroom stall which Lockner at first dismissed as a heavy period, according to the Los Angeles Times.

A second coworker then checked on Lockner only to find “a newborn baby face down in toilet bowl.” Lockner reportedly pushed her coworker back while she flushed the toilet, and begged her not to call the police.

When police arrived, they found the baby in Lockner’s arms, but the newborn was not breathing and had no pulse. Paramedics revived the baby and transported her to a hospital, and while he is in stable condition, it is unknown whether he suffered long-term brain damage.

Lockner told investigators that did not know she was pregnant. She has been charged with attempted murder and is currently in jail with a $11 million bail, and will be granted a public defender Sept. 18.
