The New Yorker has fired Ryan Lizza after it learned of alleged “improper sexual misconduct” by the magazine’s Washington correspondent.

The New Yorker says it “recently learned that Ryan Lizza engaged in what we believe was improper sexual conduct,” in a statement released Monday afternoon. Here’s the brief statement in full:

The New Yorker recently learned that Ryan Lizza engaged in what we believe was improper sexual conduct. We have reviewed the matter and, as a result, have severed ties with Lizza. Due to a request for privacy, we are not commenting further.”

It remains unclear who was requesting privacy.

In response to his termination, Lizza released a statement expressing how he was “dismayed” at the decision:

I am dismayed that The New Yorker has decided to characterize a respectful relationship with a woman I dated as somehow inappropriate. The New Yorker was unable to cite any company policy that was violated. I am sorry to my friends, workplace colleagues, and loved ones for any embarrassment this episode may cause. I love The New Yorker, my home for the last decade, and I have the highest regard for the people who work there. But this decision, which was made hastily and without a full investigation of the relevant facts, was a terrible mistake.

Lizza, also a CNN contributor, is the latest liberal male journalist who has been swept up in a wave of sexual misconduct allegations. A member of The New Yorker’s staff since 2007, Lizza is widely regarded as one of the premier political reporters of the United States working at this time,” according to conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt. His work has also appeared in the New York TimesWashington Monthly, and The Atlantic Monthly.
