Talk show host Meghan McCain often looks pained and tortured as the conservative-ish personality on ABC’s “The View.” She presents the righty viewpoint, but one that involves a seething hatred for President Trump, which is — of course — why the ladies can usually stomach her.

Now she’s defending Melania.

McCain taped Julie Mason‘s “SiriusXM Press Pool” program in New York this week before a live audience of subscribers. The show airs today at 4p.m. While chatting, McCain told Mason that she really likes Melania. Which makes sense because even Melania doesn’t seem too fond of Trump these days.

“I like her. And I don’t know why everyone is such a hater on her,” McCain said of first lady Melania Trump. “I do like her a lot. She’s my favorite Trump. By far.”

McCain has good reason to want to stomp on Trump’s orange-hued face. Early on in his candidacy, Trump made a point to diss her father, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), in the most jarring of ways when he cracked, “I like people who weren’t captured.”

But McCain seems to feel sorry for Melania — which seems like a stretch. She chose to marry Trump and all the gold-infused toilets and riches that that entails.

“It seems like the worst job in the entire world,” she continued. “…I don’t know her nor have I ever met her, but my understanding is maybe she wasn’t as enthused about him running for President as maybe we would have… like maybe my mother was when my dad ran. But I do like her and I wish people would give her a break.”

And there it is — their psychological connection.

McCain gives Melania a break because she identifies with her own mother’s complex relationship with her father. On A recent episode of “The View” McCain expressed empathy for Melania, saying that she understands only too well when a politician’s wife has to put on an act of  ‘everything’s fine’ when the whole world is watching.

She was obviously referring to her mom, Cindy McCain. The couple met and fell in love while Sen. McCain was still married to his first wife, Carol Shepp, a model who had gotten into a horrific car accident while he was a POW. By the time then-naval officer John McCain returned home, Shepp was five inches shorter and confined to a wheelchair. McCain easily had eyes for Cindy McCain, who was 17 years his junior.

There was also that time in the early 1990s when Cindy was hooked on painkillers (a little matter that she kept secret from her husband).

Like most people, the McCains have had ups and downs in their marriage.

Perhaps Sen. McCain would never agree, but Melania may always find a friend in the the younger, female McCain.
