President Trump’s joke on Monday that Democrats committed “treason” by not applauding during his State of the Union address appears to have rankled many Democrats and establishment reporters.

But just last year, Democratic Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine claimed that the president’s son could have committed “treason.”

Kaine made the serious accusation in July 2017, after Donald Trump Jr. was revealed to have met during the campaign with a Russian lawyer who claimed to have dirt on Hillary Clinton. (RELATED: Nancy Pelosi Responds To Trump’s ‘Treason’ Comment)

“That, the investigation — it, it’s not — nothing is proven yet. But, we’re now beyond obstruction of justice in terms of what’s being investigated,” Kaine told CNN. “This is moving into perjury, false statements and even potentially treason.”

Kaine’s comment was delivered with far more gravitas than Trump’s joke on Monday.

“Someone said treasonous. Yeah, I guess, why not? Shall we call that treason? Why not?” Trump said, flippantly. “I mean they certainly didn’t seem to love our country very much. But you look at that and it’s really very, very sad.”
