White House Chief of Staff John Kelly joked on Thursday that God “punished” him by having him switch jobs from the Department of Homeland Security to his current position

Kelly served as DHS secretary before moving over to the White House to be chief of staff. He returned Thursday to Homeland Security to speak at the agency’s 15th anniversary.

“I would just open by saying I have almost no right to be up here on this stage…you know I miss everyone of you every day,” Kelly said to audience laughter and applause.

The moderator assured him, “you have every right to be here, so thank you.”

“Truly, at six months the last thing I wanted to do was walk away from one of the great honors of my life, being the secretary of homeland security, but I did something wrong and God punished me I guess,” Kelly jested.
