A veteran of the Missouri Air National Guard was stabbed to death after an alleged road rage incident Saturday, according to police in Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Cody M. Harter, 23, was found dead on the side of the highway after being stabbed in the chest, Fox News reported. Witnesses told police they saw two men arguing on the side of the highway with both of their cars pulled over. Police said they believe the suspect stabbed Harter and jumped back into his car fleeing the scene.

Witnesses also said they saw a man stumble across the highway at about 7:30 p.m, before collapsing on the pavement. When first responders arrived to the scene, they pronounced Harter dead, FOX4KC reported.

“He did a tour over in Iraq and he was in Qatar,” Harter’s mother said at a news conference Sunday. “He helped with hurricane relief in Houston and Puerto Rico. He loved everyone. He would help anybody. He only had one semester left until he graduated with an engineering technology degree.”

Authorities were provided with limited information on the suspect and the vehicle he was driving. The suspect remains on the run and Harter’s mother asked anyone with information on her son’s death to come forward in the Sunday press conference.

“[Harter] brought us great joy. He knew great joy. He knew love. He knew adventure. He knew kindness, and now we know pain and loss. If you saw anything, even if you think it was nothing, please call,” she said. “Please call to put the pieces together. Let’s find who did this senseless act, so that you’re not sitting here when it’s your child. Please, please call.”
