For the first time since January, Reuters’ generic ballot poll shows Republicans leadingemocrats in the 2018 midterm elections.
Reuters’ ballot poll, which is administered every few days in 2018 up until the midterms, asked respondents which party’s candidate they would vote for if the elections were held on the day people took the survey. At the Democrats’ peak lead from the poll taken on April 4, 45 percent of registered voters said they would vote for the Democratic candidate, while 33.6 percent said they would vote for the Republican, according to the poll. In the most recent poll, taken May 17, 38.1 percent of registered voters would vote for a hypothetical Republican candidate, leading the Democrats by 1.4 percent.
This comes on the heels of fundraising numbers for April 2018. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which oversees House campaigns, raised $11.2 million in comparison to their counterpart — the National Republican Congressional Committee’s $5.4 million. However, the Republican National Committee has significantly more cash than the Democratic National Committee, $43.8 million and $8.7 million, respectively. The newest poll surveyed 1,338 registered voters and was conducted through online inquiries.
