Educators were treated to a free firearms training session in San Diego on Sunday for “Train a Teacher Day.”

The five hour course consisted of smaller classes aimed at teaching “safety, proficiency, and familiarity” with firearms. (RELATED: NRA To Fight Oregon’s Semi-Automatic Firearm Ban)

The event was complimentary for anyone across the country affiliated with a school, which included teachers, support staff, administrators and even board members. It was co-hosted by Discount Gun Mart and Indoor Range, a local gun shop, and San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO), a gun rights political action committee.

“The overall purpose is to give back to those who care and educate our children,” said Wendy Hauffen, executive administrator for SDCGO. “This event will teach our teachers about safety, defensive strategies and awareness, and answer any questions educators may have about safe and responsible firearms ownership.”

There was no debate regarding whether or not to arm teachers discussed during the event, but rather it provided information to allow for an intelligent conversation in future discussions.

Individuals with concealed carry permits were previously allowed to bring firearms onto campus if approved by the superintendent, however, Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB 424 in October closing the loophole, only allowing for certain exceptions.
