Meghan McCain: The Summit Was A Good Idea But Trump Was Too Buddy-Buddy With Kim

Meghan McCain said on Tuesday that she was glad President Trump agreed to take a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, but she was concerned by some of the optics at the summit between the two in Singapore.

McCain began by explaining that she believes in meeting with adversaries because that’s the way to drive the conversation forward.

She said, “A few months ago, we were all sort of living in fear of nuclear war between the United States and North Korea. And I was a proponent of taking a meeting because I’m always a proponent of meeting with your adversaries.”

But McCain also said that she was not thrilled about the backdrop of that meeting being the North Korean flag on equal footing with the American flag.

“I had a really big problem — you guys know how I feel about the flag with the American flag and the north Korean flag next to each other as the back drop. We are not the same. And we were talking about this yesterday with Russia. This is a totalitarian communist dictator in the same vein as Hitler, who by the way — murder, enslavement, torture, imprisonment, sexual violence, starvation, forced abortions, political, racial and religious persecution … It is completely and utterly the closest thing to hitler’s Germany that exists in modern time. My problem was how far it went with the buddy-buddy and there was no talk whatsoever of the human rights violations doing on in that country.”

McCain did give President Trump credit for taking the meeting, however, saying that we should not undersell the historic nature of what happened in Singapore. She said, “I never thought I would see this in my lifetime whatsoever, so I give Trump credit for this.”
