Otto Warmbier’s parents released a statement Tuesday thanking President Donald Trump for his support and addressing the U.S. and North Korea summit.

President Trump and Kim Jong-Un met to discuss North Korea’s potential nuclear disarmament in Singapore on Monday. Fred and Cindy Warmer said they are “[hopeful] something positive can come of this.” (RELATED: Here’s What Trump, Kim Jong Un Agreed Upon At Summit)

“Otto Warmbier is a very special person and he will be for a long time in my life. His parents are good friends of mine. I think without Otto, this would not have happened,” Trump said Tuesday at a news conference following the meeting with Kim.

Last week, the president honored Warmbier during a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “He did not died in vain. So to the Warmbier family, our love and our respect,” Trump said. (RELATED: Trump Honors Warmbier, Other American Hostages During Press Conference)
