Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt defended Trump against an MSNBC anchor and guest who suggested that his presidency is a “moral catastrophe” on Wednesday.

Peter Wehner, a former speechwriter for George W. Bush, accused Hewitt of being blind to the alleged moral degradation of the Republican Party.

“If you take a step back, what’s happening to the Republican Party is a moral catastrophe,” Wehner said, referencing the primary wins of several pro-Trump Republicans on Tuesday night.

Hewitt shook his head and started to defend his party’s “great nominees,” but anchor Stephanie Ruhle interjected to ask if Trump is a “moral catastrophe.”

“Is President Trump a moral catastrophe?” she asked.

“No, absolutely not,” Hewitt shot back. “In fact, Mitch McConnell said it best. More has been done for originalism and the defense of rule of law in the last 18 months than in the previous 18 years by the appointment of Neil Gorsuch, 22 federal appeals court judges.”

“The president in the republic does not drive my morals, your morals, Pete’s morals,” he added. “The president of the republic drives policy, and he appoints judges, which uphold the rule of law.”
