Special counsel Robert Mueller filed a request with a federal court on Wednesday for 150 blank subpoenas, equating to 75 total possible subpoenas.
The request was filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, where former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort resides, and requires that each subpoena recipient testify at a July 25 criminal case, the same day Manafort’s trial is scheduled to commence. The judge presiding over the case, T.S. Ellis III, agreed on Tuesday to push the trial back a day later from July 24 to July 25 because of a scheduling conflict, reported Courthouse News.
Manafort is due in a U.S. District Court of Washington D.C. on July 24 related to allegations of witness tampering, according to the Washington Examiner.
The party serving a blank subpoena must fill in the blanks before it is served, but does not need to do so before the subpoena is requested. For each possible subpoena, a separate subpoena is required for both a witness and for the defense.
Manafort’s charges include federal tax fraud and failing to report foreign bank accounts, which arose from Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling during the 2016 election. He has pleaded not guilty, arguing the charges are outside the scope of the investigation.
