House Majority Whip Steve Scalise opened up Wednesday about what he went through after a gunman opened fire one year ago while Republican congressmen were practicing for the annual congressional baseball game.

“I remember just not being able to move. I knew I had been hit, I just didn’t know how bad it was,” the Louisiana representative explained in a clip that will air in full Thursday on “CBS This Morning.”

“And so when my legs gave out and I fell down. You know you’re just fighting for your life at that point,” he added.

Last year, during practice for the annual game between the Republicans and Democrats, five people were wounded, with Scalise being taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

He was shot in the hip and remained in the hospital for months, undergoing multiple surgeries before he resumed his duties in the fall.

Scalise will be at the game Thursday, playing second baseman for the charity event at Nationals Park.

Republican congressional team coach Rep. Roger Williams of Texas said President Donald Trump is expected to come to the game.

During the State of the Union address, Trump praised Scalise for overcoming tremendous obstacles.

“With us tonight is one of the toughest people ever to serve in this House,” the president shared. “A guy who took a bullet, almost died, and was back to work 3 and a half months later, the Legend from Louisiana, Congressman Steve Scalise.”
