A man slammed a taxi into a crowd of World Cup fans in Moscow, Russia, Saturday, injuring at least seven people.

Thousands of visitors are in the Russian capital for the international soccer tournament. The suspect, a man carrying a license from Kyrgyzstan, attempted to flee the scene, but he was apprehended by authorities before he could make his escape.

The Moscow Traffic Authority reported that the suspect said he did not hit the crowd on purpose, Reuters reported.

The man is believed to have lost control of his vehicle, Moscow Police revealed, according to The Independent. Unconfirmed video of the incident seems to show the vehicle accelerate suddenly into the crowd.

The driver is said to have fallen asleep at the wheel, Russian media Interfax reported. No alcohol was reportedly found in his body.

The incident raises concerns about the possibility of terrorist activity during the World Cup. “Large-scale international events such as the World Cup present an attractive target for terrorists,” the U.S. Department of State said in a travel warning issued Friday. “Although security for the World Cup will be extensive, terrorists may seek to attack event locations such as stadiums and Fan Fest viewing areas, tourist sites, transportation hubs, and other public venues.”

Vehicle attacks are a popular approach among extremists. (RELATED: A New Norm In Terrorism? Why Vehicle Attacks Put Everyone On Edge)
