Over 100 Microsoft employees signed a letter urging CEO Satya Nadella to terminate the company’s contract with Immigration And Customs Enforcement, according to a New York Times report Tuesday.
“We believe that Microsoft must take an ethical stand, and put children and families above profits,” the letter said. “We request that Microsoft cancel its contracts with ICE, and with other clients who directly enable ICE.” (RELATED: CNN Tries To Shame Border Patrol Agent – He Flips The Script And Leaves Host Speechless)
The letter did not say who the “other clients” were. The federal government paid Microsoft over $39 million in 2017 alone for a variety of federal services.
Microsoft said its contract with ICE is limited to a cloud services, and that it does not enable ICE to separate children from their families at the border, according to a Monday press release.
“As a company, Microsoft is dismayed by the forcible separation of children from their families at the border,” the press release stated. “We urge the administration to change its policy and Congress to pass legislation ensuring children are no longer separated from their families.”
Microsoft previously said it was “proud” to work with ICE in modernizing its IT solutions using Microsoft’s Azure, according to a January 2018 press release.
