Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will be pouring $80 million of his own money into supporting Democrats as they attempt to take control of the House of Representatives in the November midterm elections, according to reports by The New York Times.

“Republicans in Congress have had almost two years to prove they could govern responsibly. They failed. As we approach the 2018 midterms, it’s critical that we elect people who will lead in ways that this Congress won’t,” Bloomberg said in a statement Wednesday.

Democrats will need 23 congressional seats to win the majority, and Bloomberg’s massive donations could be just the key. His ability to fund expensive ad campaigns on television, online and by mail in more than a dozen suburban districts are a move to tip votes in the Democrats favor.

Bloomberg’s generous contribution surpasses that of casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who donated $30 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund back in May in hopes of helping Republicans keep control of the House. (RELATED: House Republicans Get HUGE Cash Infusion Ahead Of Midterms)

Bloomberg has supported candidates on either side of the aisle in previous elections, endorsing both Republican and Democratic candidates in the same election cycle, which he intends to do again this year. However, Bloomberg’s dissatisfaction with Congress inability to act as a “co-equal branch of government” has made him a 2018 mega-donor for the Democratic party.
