Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will enter his second term with greater executive power because of a decree published on Wednesday.

The decree officialized the abolition of the office of prime minister and transfer of certain parliamentary powers to the president. The changes that transform Turkey into a powerful one-executive system were narrowly passed in a 2017 referendum, reported Reuters.

Erdogan will receive the powers, such as creating and regulating ministries and firing civil servants without parliament’s permission, at his inauguration on July 8 or 9. (RELATED: Many Venezuelans Forced To Use A Barter System As Inflation Rate Hits 40,000 Percent)

Erdogan’s government has been ignoring parliament since July 2016, when Turkey declared a state of emergency after a failed coup. The president promised to lift the state of emergency while campaigning ahead of the June 24 election.

Other powers that Erdogan will receive at his swearing-in include drafting the state budget and dissolving parliament. This would cause an early presidential election that would let Erdogan run for a third five-year presidential term, reported Deutsche Welle. He entered his first term in 2014 but called early elections for June when he thought his support was high.

Erdogan had a stronger opposition than he anticipated in the June 24 election but still emerged victorious. He has led Turkey since becoming prime minister in 2003. Before he took the office of president, the position was more ceremonial.
