EU migration into the United Kingdom dropped to its lowest level since 2013, according to a study by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) published Monday.
The ONS study showed that the U.K.’s net long time migration was at 101,000 in 2017 with the figure being the lowest since 2013, according to The Guardian. However, net migration into the U.K. added 100,000 more people to its overall population, the study reported.
The ONS research also discovered that 280,000 people came into the U.K. than left in 2017. Immigration into the U.K. is currently at a stable number of 630,000. The UK received the most migrants from Poland, then India, and followed by Pakistan in 2015, according to figures from The Migration Observatory. “With around 280,000 more people coming to the UK than leaving in 2017, these latest figures show that migration has continued to add to the UK population. Net migration fell following record levels in 2015 and early 2016 and has been broadly stable since. This is similar to the level recorded in the year ending September 2014,” according to statistician of the study Nicola White from ONS’ Migration Statistics Division. Economic migration also dramatically lowered following the Brexit vote, according to another ONS study. Migrants that were looking for work dropped by 43 percent from 2016 to 2017. There were 74,000 in 2017 compared to 130,000 in 2016.
ONS’ research reported that net migration outside the EU rose to 227,000, this figure is the highest level since 2010.
