Jane Fonda wants people to vote in the upcoming midterm elections because the United States is in what she calls an “existential crisis.”

Fonda, 80, spoke out about the November midterm elections, saying she is “scared” about the current direction of American politics, in an interview with People magazine. The veteran actress also teamed up with Swing Left, a grassroots campaign that encourages people to vote Democrat in swing states for the midterms, according to Fox News. (RELATED: Feminist Jane Fonda Wants To Work With Quentin Tarantino: ‘Would You Put In A Good Word For Me?’)

“We’re in an existential crisis, you know our democracy has been challenged very, very gravely, and I’m scared. I have grandchildren, and when I die I want them to be able to say to themselves that Grandma did everything she could to save democracy and make the world a safer, better, place for us. Whether I’ll succeed — I’m not alone — that’s what’s important,” Fonda told People. (RELATED: Megyn Kelly Fires Back At Jane Fonda Over Plastic Surgery-ghazi [VIDEO])

“Nothing has ever been quite like it is now, in terms of fundamental threats to our democracy, but I have seen miraculous things happen when all looks bleak. But I have seen things change for the good because of the efforts of individuals working together in coalition and that gives me hope. It’s certainly better than the alternative” Fonda added. (RELATED: Jane Fonda ‘Found Out About Harvey About A Year Ago’ And Didn’t Say Anything)

Fonda also appeared in a video Tuesday for The Last Weekend, a coalition of progressive organizations that encourage people to participate in the upcoming midterm elections. The actress appeared alongside “Grace and Frankie” costar Lily Tomlin and “Parks and Recreation” actress Rashida Jones.

Fonda also claimed in the People interview that Trump attacks celebrities because their messages are effective when they speak out for those whose voices are less heard.
