A Washington Post education reporter branded Attorney General Jeff Sessions the “worst teacher of the week” because he did not condemn a “lock her up chant” on Tuesday.

WaPo education reporter Valerie Strauss gave Sessions the “worst teacher of the week” accolade despite the week being less than halfway finished. She complained Sessions did not lecture high school students at a Turning Point USA conference on what she believed was a misapplication of the “lock her up” chant, instead chuckling at it and saying he heard that often during the 2016 campaign.

“This is what [Sessions] did not do: educate the crowd about the fact that Clinton was never charged with any crimes, and that U.S. presidents don’t jail their opponents because they don’t like them,” Strauss wrote. “He could have given [the students] a basic lesson in American jurisprudence. He didn’t.”

The reporter did not consider the notion that the students chanting “lock her up!” might have believed there had been a miscarriage of justice concerning former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, or that they were merely using the phrase, which has become a popular meme, in a facetious manner. (RELATED: DOJ Lays Down The Law On ‘Unconstitutional’ UMich Speech Policies)

Strauss said Sessions should have behaved like then-presidential candidate John McCain in 2008, when he countered “racial and ethnic attacks” against fellow candidate Barack Obama at a Minnesota rally by calling Obama a “decent person” and claiming people did not need to be scared of the prospect of his presidency.

When a McCain supporter called Obama an “Arab” when using the Republican candidate’s mic, McCain took it away from her and said “no, ma’am. He’s a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that’s what this campaign is all about.”

Strauss did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
