President Donald Trump congratulated White House chief of staff John Kelly on fulfilling one year of service at the White House, on Twitter and in person Monday.

Trump also took the opportunity to thank Kelly for a year on the job at a swearing in ceremony for newly confirmed VA Secretary Robert Wilkie, saying General “Kelly, who – by the way – one year today, right? He became my chief of staff, General Kelly. John Kelly. In case of anybody’s never heard of him.”

Kelly took over for departed chief of staff Reince Priebus after a period of significant staff turmoil at the White House. The retired four-star Marine General has served as a key adviser to Trump on the issue of immigration and has put in place an orderly staffing process, though he has been at the center of his own struggles with the president.
