More than 70 people were charged Wednesday in Washington, D.C., while protesting the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
Capitol Police charged 74 protesters with crimes including crowding, obstructing, or incommoding the Senate office buildings, reported The Hill.
Around 600 people reportedly attended the Rally to Stop Kavanaugh outside Capitol Hill before dozens of protesters moved to the Hart Senate Office Building, according to Jennifer Flynn Walker, director of mobilization and advocacy for the nonprofit Center for Popular Democracy.
Multiple Democratic senators spoke at the rally including Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer of New York, Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut. (RELATED: The Numbers Are In And They’re Looking Good For Kavanaugh)
Speakers asserted that if Kavanaugh is confirmed, then clean air, clean water, women’s reproductive freedoms and the entire checks-and-balance system of the American government could be destroyed.
“The President would be a monarch if Brett Kavanaugh becomes a Supreme Court justice,” Blumenthal told the crowd. “I don’t think Americans want an imperial presidency, do you?”
Kavanaugh is expected to begin attending the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings in September, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell hopes to schedule a confirmation vote prior to the midterm elections in November.
