A U.S. government scientist declared the 55 boxes of human remains sent from North Korea are “consistent with being Americans” after viewing their contents.

John E. Byrd, director of the laboratory in Hawaii in which the remains are undergoing in-depth forensic analysis, confirmed Thursday that the bones belonged to Americans, but that it was too early to determine how many individuals were represented by the remains, according to the Associated Press. Byrd said the equipment that accompanied the bones, such as boots and canteens, are consistent with those used by American forces and that the remains were likely from those who died in the Korean War between 1950 and 1953. (RELATED: North Korea Hands Over 55 Boxes Of Bones With Only One Dog Tag, Claims They Are Remains Of US Soldiers)

Byrd also said the individual represented by the single dog tag that accompanied the remains has been identified and that officials have contacted the man’s family.

Vice President Mike Pence welcomed the arrival of the remains in Hawaii on Wednesday during a solemn carry ceremony. He hailed the return of the American soldiers’ remains as a new hope for families of the fallen and a sign of improving relations with and possible future peace in the Korean peninsula.
