China is vastly outperforming the U.S. by several measures in the race to develop the next generation of wireless communications.

A new report by Deloitte Consulting published Tuesday shows that China outspent the U.S. by $24 billion and has built 350,000 new wireless towers since 2015. The U.S. has built just 30,000 in the same time.

Additionally, China produces its new wireless communications technology — known as the fifth generation networks, or simply 5G — about 35 percent cheaper than the U.S., Reuters reported Tuesday. China added more 5G sites in three months in 2017 than the U.S. had in the past three years.

“For the U.S. to remain competitive and eventually emerge as a leader, the race to 5G should be carefully evaluated and swift actions should be taken,” Dan Littmann, a principal at Deloitte, said in a statement to Reuters.

The new technology, with its highly advanced speed and setting a new standard for decades to come, is expected to rein in an “era of untapped economic potential,” the report said. (RELATED: As China’s ZTE Crosses Last Hurdle To Lift US Ban, Shares Skyrocket)

“The potential negative consequences of a protracted 5G deployment could take decades to overcome,” the report notes. “The United States led the world in 4G and in the process created thousands of jobs. We simply cannot afford to lose the race to 5G.”

“5G technology will influence everything we do. Instead of just connecting people to people through their smartphones, 5G connects an unlimited number of things to other things, which can communicate all day, every day,” the report added.

U.S. telecommunications companies Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon, are expected to launch their 5G networks in early 2019, CNET reported. AT&T said it’ll bring it’s 5G network to three cities in 2018.
