Abortion abolitionists rallied in front of a Washington state Planned Parenthood clinic Saturday, calling for an end to all legal abortion.

Participants in the protest said their protest is different than other pro-life rallies because they are “abolitionists” who will not accept legislative compromise on abortion, which they allege should be completely illegal, The Spokesman-Review reported Saturday.

The rally attracted roughly 70 protesters who held signs and handed out flyers as they marched from Spokane’s Planned Parenthood clinic to downtown Spokane.

Washington state Rep. Matt Shea attended the rally and emphasized the importance of adoption as an alternative to abortion.

“The great part about the word abortion is you change a couple of letters and it actually turns into adoption,” Rep. Matt Shea said in a Facebook video he posted about the rally, according to The Spokesman-Review. “I think that’s the answer. That’s what Christ would want.”

Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho public affairs Vice President Paul Dillon called the protesters “a radical fringe group” and urged abortion advocates not to counter protest, according to The Spokesman-Review.

Operation Save America (OSA) helped organize the event. OSA is a pro-life group that “intercedes on behalf of preborn babies,” according to its Twitter bio.

Saturday’s protest comes after the Washington state Senate passed Senate Bill 6219 in March mandating that any company that provides maternity care must also provide coverage for women who seek abortions. The bill also requires insurance companies to cover all contraceptive methods including drugs, implants, consultations and sterilization procedures. The legislation does not allow exceptions for religious or moral objections. (RELATED: Abortion Groups Seek To Knock Down Virginia Restrictions With Lawsuit)

California lawmakers are also debating whether to adopt a bill that would require public universities and colleges in the state to offer abortion drugs at their health centers. Senate Bill 320, sponsored by Democratic state Sen. Connie Leyva, will require the health centers to provide women with abortion pills up to 10 weeks in pregnancy.
