Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio campaigned with Michigan Republican U.S. Senate nominee John James at a restaurant in the heart of Detroit Monday.

Rubio joined James, who is taking on Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow in the 2018 midterm election, touting his support for the combat veteran at the event saying James is just the candidate the Senate needs.

“Why is this guy running for the U.S. Senate, he’s got everything going right in his life?” Rubio joked during the event. “But we’re so grateful that he is, despite being overqualified, because our country really needs that sort of leadership in the 21st century.”

James, who was fully endorsed by President Donald Trump in the GOP primary election, reminded voters of his drive to create jobs in Michigan, telling the crowd that he will produce real results. (RELATED: Trump Doubles Down On His Support For Combat Vet And Businessman John James)

“My message of economic opportunity, and what I mean is that people don’t want free stuff, they just want a fair shot, and that’s what is truly resonating,” James said Monday. ” We are taking this message to every corner of the state, because this isn’t a white or black message, this is an American message focused on action and results, something we haven’t seen from 43-year career politician Debbie Stabenow.”

The 36-year-old combat veteran will take on Stabenow in the November 6 election, hoping to defeat the three-term sitting Senator.
