A Variety reporter asked Michael Avenatti, Stormy Daniels’ lawyer, “what the heck” he was doing at the MTV Video Music Awards on Monday night.

Avenatti was the apple of the media’s eye when he helped Daniels sue President Trump over a non-disclosure agreement the two made after an alleged affair, but the Hollywood lawyer seems to have fallen out of favor in recent weeks. (RELATED: CNN Hosts Avenatti 59 Times In Two Months)

A Variety reporter was especially curious as to why Avenatti, who is now floating a 2020 presidential run, was making an appearance at the VMAs.

“What the heck are you doing here?” the reporter asked incredulously.

“Well, you know, I was invited to this great event … and I thought I’d show up,” Avenatti replied.

“Were you surprised to be invited?” the Variety reporter questioned.

“A little bit,” Avenatti said, before expounding on his desire to run for president. “I’m serious about it. I’m seriously looking at it, I’m traveling around, talking to people in the country.”
