Texas Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick called for Congress to act on illegal immigration Thursday, claiming that a failure to do so made Democrats and media complicit in the recent murder of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts.

Patrick laid out the problem, saying that the current laws effectively protected illegals from detection by putting restrictions on the employers who might unknowingly hire someone with false documentation.

“The people of this country, if this doesn’t wake them up, you aren’t safe anywhere from MS-13 or illegal aliens,” he explained, “this is a game they play. They turn in fake social Security numbers until they get caught up by the Social Security system and you know what happens? Under the laws you can’t ask them about it. You just say we have a false hit by Social Security on you. Did you make a mistake? That illegal person goes to another company and does the same thing.”

Praising President Donald Trump’s agenda regarding illegal immigration, Patrick then specifically implicated Democrats and the media. “The president is right on this,” he said. “Look, I’ve lived this issue as a border lieutenant governor and senator. I’ve been down there many times. Congress has to act. You know, again, the CNNs, MSNBCs, most of the print media and Democrats are all accomplices in the death of this young girl and the death of everyone else.”
