“They’re the ones honestly who have been driven crazy,” Trump said of a “resistance” whose “horrible ideas have been rejected by the American people.”

Calling the anonymous White House official who wrote a critical New York Times op-ed an “anonymous, gutless coward,” Trump told the crowd that a “good story” for the Times would be for their reporters to “go and investigate who it is.” (RELATED: Five Key Questions About The New York Times’ Anonymous ‘Senior Official’)

“For the sake of our national security the New York Times should publish his name at once,” said Trump. “I think their reporters should go and investigate who it is. That would actually be a good story. That would be a good story. Unelected, deep state operatives who defy the voters to push their own secret agendas are truly a threat to democracy itself …”

In an off-stage interview with Fox News’ Pete Hegseth before the speech, Trump said the person who wrote the op-ed was likely a “low-level” or “deep state” person, according to the White House pool.

“Virtually you know it’s treason,” he told Hegseth.

The White House pool reported that Trump gave no indication that he knew who wrote the op-ed.
