The poll, released Thursday, was conducted between Aug. 29 and Sept. 2 and shows de Leon closing the gap to only 8 points. Feinstein sits at 37 percent while de Leon is at 29 percent. Newsom had 34 percent of the vote in the June primaries, while Cox had 25 percent, “with both easily advancing to November’s general election,” according to SF Gate.
The poll also shows Feinstein enjoying a greater “intensity” of support, but de Leon is gaining more Republican votes, along with “newer and younger voters.”
Feinstein has already dropped her support for the death penalty in an effort to appear more progressive and has faced heavy backlash from her own party for not being liberal enough for California.
The state party endorsed de Leon in July despite Feinstein having held the seat since 1992.
In California, the top two candidates in the primary face off in the general election, so de Leon will face off against Feinstein despite only getting 12 percent of the vote. There will be no Republicans on the ballot.
The same poll also showed Republican candidate John Cox closing the gap against Democratic Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom in California’s gubernatorial race, as he pulled to within 5 points. Newsom garnered 44 percent while Cox pulled in 39 percent. Seventeen percent said they are still undecided.
