Democratic San Francisco Mayor London Breed has “great concern” about a late August pay raise for 3,600 San Francisco teachers for many reasons, namely because the increase relies on a revenue stream that may never exist.

“Neither [the mayor nor the Board of Supervisors] has appropriated and transferred SFUSD any funds for this purpose,” Breed wrote in a letter to San Francisco United School District (SFUSD) superintendent Vincent Matthews Friday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Matthews and other school district leaders approved the $5,500 annual salary boost for teachers through Proposition G, a June ballot measure that passed with 61 percent approval, reported the Chronicle. Proposition G pays for the raises with a $298-per-year parcel tax on homeowners, but the parcel tax funds were not set to take effect until December.

On top of that, a lawsuit brought by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association about another June ballot measure, Proposition C, could kill Proposition G. Proposition C passed with 51 percent approval. It also approved a tax, but the taxpayers association maintains that state law requires tax-levying ballot measures to pass with two-thirds majority, reported the Chronicle.

If the taxpayers association wins, neither Proposition C nor G met the proper threshold.

Breed was a supporter of the parcel tax and wrote that “our educators deserve better pay for the important work they do every single day to educate and support our children and families” in her letter to Vincent, according to the Chronicle. The school district will “continue in processing the raises,” San Francisco Unified School District spokeswoman Laura Dudnick said according to the Chronicle.
