President Trump forcefully defended his embattled pick for the Supreme Court Monday at the White House.
President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, is facing allegations of sexual misconduct in the 11th hour of his confirmation process from Christine Blasey Ford, who has publicly accused Kavanaugh of assaulting her 36 years ago when they were both teenagers. Kavanaugh has forcefully denied the allegations and welcomed further questions about the incident.
Trump was asked a barrage of questions about the allegations during an event Monday afternoon. Trump, speaking of Kavanaugh, said there is “not even a little blemish on his record.”
“We want to make sure everything is perfect. Everything is just right,” Trump said before pivoting the blame to Democrats for leaking the allegation after hearings. “I wish the Democrats could have done this a lot sooner because they had this information for many months.”
“They shouldn’t have waited until, literally, the last days. They should have done it a lot sooner,” Trump continued. “Judge Kavanaugh spent quite a bit of time with Sen. Feinstein, and it wasn’t even brought up at that meeting and she had this information. So, you would have thought certainly that she would have brought it up at the meeting.”
Feinstein has said publicly that she had the accusation information for weeks before the Senate hearings for Kavanaugh started.
When asked about the potential delay of the nomination process Trump said, “I would like to see a complete process. This, if it takes a little delay — it will take a little delay, but it certainly shouldn’t be very much.”
Trump pivoted again to placing the blame on Democrats for withholding the Kavanaugh accusations: “Again, this is something that should have been brought up long before. They had the information in July, as I understand it. That’s a long time ago. And nobody mentioned it until the other day. You know it’s very unfortunate they didn’t mention it sooner.”
Trump concluded, saying that he was sure the nomination “will work out very well.”
