Joy Behar accused “white men” in Congress of “not protecting women” in the way they are handling the sexual assault accusation against Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
The comments came during a panel discussion on “The View” Wednesday over Kavanaugh’s accusers, Christine Blasey Ford, saying she wants the FBI to investigate her claims before she will testify before the Senate Judiciary committee.
Behar called it a “great teaching moment” and recalled a time when a “creepy” older guy in her neighborhood came onto her and how her father protected her, before accusing the men in the Congress of not doing the same for the women in this country.
“On the contrary, these people in Congress right now in that Senate Judiciary Committee, these white men, old by the way, are not protecting women,” Behar exclaimed. “They’re protecting a man who is probably guilty. If you’re not, Judge Kavanaugh, take the lie detector test.”
“Prove it the way she did and the way Anita Hill did, that they were not lying,” she added. “Let’s see that from you, or are you a coward?”
Sunny Hostin agreed and said the “FBI was sent to interview both Anita hill and Judge [Clarence] Thomas two weeks before the public hearings on Hill’s allegations.”
“Why, why doesn’t the FBI investigate these allegations,” Hostin asked. “Why not interview Mark Judge? Why not interview the high school students that were probably at the party? Why not interview other high school students. Get the full story and then have the hearing.”
Abby Huntsman said she can’t stop thinking about Ford and feels for what she’s gone through as well as that she feels “for the women in Kavanaugh’s family.”
“There are a lot of people who are going through some really tough times right now,” Huntsman explained. “But whether she needs time or not, her story is compelling enough that you don’t even need a background check or another FBI background. If she gets up there, whether it’s next week or the week after that or the week after that … there’s enough in her story where I think you’re going to have Murkowski and Collins and Jeff Flake and others that will say, ‘we can’t go down this road and support this guy.'”
“I totally disagree with that,” Behar interjected. “I think that they are vehemently for overturning Roe v. Wade. They want that, the right wing in this country wants it. And they will say, ‘well, she says her story, he says his story, okay, I believe him.’ That’s what’s going to happen.”
“How about the men that have daughters and that have wives and that have sisters? Where are they?” Hostin said. “Why aren’t they standing up and saying, ‘let’s do the investigation, let’s listen to her, let’s hear this story’? I want to hear more from them. I’m so surprised at all of these people.”
“Clearly those guys don’t see that as being important because they’re not looking at their daughters the same way they look at their sons,” Goldberg explained.
