Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) issued a tweet on Wednesday night to announce her decision to vote ‘no’ in confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

McCaskill insisted her decision is not a result of recent allegations that Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted a woman when he was 17. McCaskill’s opposition comes from “his positions on several key issues, most importantly the avalanche of dark, anonymous money that is crushing our democracy.”

The Democratic senator also raised concern over Kavanaugh’s support for ‘issue ads,’ which she claims “are now flooding the airways in this nation to directly influence election outcomes, drowning the concept of individuals having the strongest voice in our democracy.”

Kavanaugh’s views on campaign finance were clearly an issue for McCaskill, as her statement continues to lambast the judge’s rulings on donations, ‘dark anonymous money’ and foreign influences in elections.

McCaskill was thought to be a potential Democratic vote in favor of Kavanaugh, as she is in a highly contested bid to keep her Missouri Senate seat.
