With their global expansion into Europe, Politico is making big changes. Today they named Politico Magazine founding editor Susan Glasser editor of the publication. The Mirror has learned that Editor-in-Chief John Harris will maintain his title, but will take on an expanded role to focus on plans abroad.

Politico took a hit recently when they lost one of their premiere hires — Rick Berke from the NYT — who left his executive editor job before completing a year at the suburban empire.

“Susan is among the smartest, most innovative and creative editors around. She shares our belief that POLITICO is better positioned than any company to exploit this moment in journalism,” said Politico President and Chief Executive Officer Jim VandeHei, Editor-in-Chief John F. Harris and Chief Operating Officer Kim Kingsley in a memo to staff in a release.

Both Glasser and publisher Robert Allbritton had ambitious quotes. (Capitalizations are theirs for emphasis that Politico is a BIG deal.)

Allbritton: “My ambitions are now plain for all to see: I want POLITICO to expand its presence and possibility in Washington, around the country and overseas. Never before has so much opportunity in media presented itself. And never before have we invested so heavily in seizing it. Susan, who I eagerly helped recruit more than a year ago, will be a huge part of this.”

Glasser: “A year in, I’m even more bullish on POLITICO and its future: There is an inspiring and clear vision for the next stage of POLITICO’s growth – nationally and internationally. I am honored to lead a newsroom that in a breathtakingly short time has gone from insurgent to Washington institution – all while never losing touch with its startup roots.”
