The European Union’s experiment of relinquishing national sovereignty to Brussels has dangerously eroded self-governance in Europe, according to one former American diplomat who spent decades working in Brussels and elsewhere.

Todd Huizinga, the director of International Programs at the Acton Institute says the EU “is a long way towards transforming Europe from a continent of democratically-accountable nation states to a post-democratic supra-nationalist order in which voters have very little to say in how they are governed.”

The strategic use of “good-sounding vague language” obfuscates the power grabbing occurring in the EU’s global government and within the left’s agenda in America, Huizinga explains in this exclusive video interview with The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Huizinga says President Barack Obama “had no business” telling Brits in March to support staying in the EU when the June 23 Brexit vote occurs. From Huizinga’s point of view, it is up to the British people to decide “if they value self government more than the benefits of EU membership.”

This EU governance by Brussels is unraveling, however, Huizinga says, due to the abundant amount of problems escalating in Europe. The migrant crisis, the increase in terrorism and crime, June’s Brexit vote and the eurozone Greek crisis, are all issues causing citizens to feel the erosion of their voices in politics.

Huizinga has a new best-selling book, “The New Totalitarian Temptation,” on the threats undermining the voices of “we the people,” especially as the EU grapples with this new form of elite governance.

The “new human rights agenda” secular globalists use to challenge tradition, law and families is also playing a roll in this shift towards supra-nationalist governance. The emerging push for people to decide their gender beyond biology has led to calls for “a stronger government” to enforce these new “human rights.” When progressive elites are able to redefine terms and human nature, according to Huizinga, they pull away from natural rights cited in the U.S. Declaration of Independence and a government grows stronger.

Americans can develop resilience, he says, by recognizing the threat to U.S. sovereignty, as well by understanding this movement by reading his book. He warns Americans to protect and preserve the U.S. Constitution, as it framed a unique, shared system of government that distributes power and checks power in a manner that has led to prosperity and human flourishing.

Huizinga commented on the 2016 election, and hopes Donald Trump “is true to the values and principles that really did make America great.” He cited free markets, adherence to the truth about the human person, and the Judeo-Christian values that have sustained our great civilization.
