The Obama administration announced it would meet its goal of 10,000 Syrian refugees admitted into the United States by Monday afternoon.

In spite of the frequent claims to diversity advanced by the Obama administration, the makeup of the refugees being admitted to the U.S. are not representative of Syria’s diverse population. In fact, the overwhelming majority of refugees entering the U.S. (98.2%) are Sunni Muslim, CNSnews reports.

Christians have specifically been targets of violence by the Islamic State ISIS. Violence against Christians by ISIS in Syria is so severe that the House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution in March calling the targeting of Christians and Yazidis “genocide.” The Obama administration later followed suit, accusing ISIS of genocide despite earlier hesitation to do so.

This admission of refugees into the United States follows already substantial U.S. aid of $5.6 billion so far to Syria and neighbors.

Germany, which admitted over a million Syrian refugees in 2015, and expects another 300,000 this year, serves as an example of Muslim refugee populations in the West. So far, it is expected that refugees will cost Germany €30 billion annually.

National security concerns also dog the debate over admitting Syrian refugees. The Obama administration has pushed back on such fears, saying that the screening process takes 12-18 months, and Secretary Kerry was recently quoted, saying, “We are very comfortable that we are bringing people in who will be a great plus to our country.”

Still, even with the goal reached today, activists aren’t satisfied. David Miliband, who heads the refugee advocacy group International Rescue Committee (IRC), called for Obama to lift the ceiling to accept 140,000 refugees next year.
