President Milos Zeman of the Czech Republic signed an amendment enforcing stricter rules to prevent economic immigration, spokesman Jiri Ovacek reported Thursday.
The bill creates an “unreliable employer label” for employers that hire illegal immigrants, and refuses to pay employees’ insurance if they are illegal residents. The government believes that this will curtail economic immigrants to the Czech Republic. The amendment also permits the government to stop residence permits if foreigners lie or submit fake documents.
Human rights groups that work with immigrants find the bill repressive to legal immigration. However, Interior Minister Milan Chovanec said the changes are necessary for security measures.
