Planned Parenthood received a whopping $6.5 million donation Monday from an anonymous Minnesota couple, and plans to use the funds to build a new state-of-the-art Minneapolis clinic.
The regional Planned Parenthood affiliate — which covers Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota — said it will also use the gift to modernize the 19 other regional facilities operating in the area. The couple promised the organization $13.5 million more over the next three years, according to the Star Tribune. No Planned Parenthood regional affiliate has ever received a sum this large from living donors.
The donors are “fierce defenders of women having the right to access the healthcare that they need, so it is very, very gratifying to accept that,” said Connie Lewis, the former vice president of external affairs, according to Fox9. Donors have doubled because “they want to help ensure that Planned Parenthood is here to provide services for another 100 years,” Lewis added.
“I do think that Planned Parenthood is going to remain in the cross hairs, no matter what happens with the Affordable Care Act,” said Sarah Stoesz, the executive of a St. Paul-based Planned Parenthood. The Planned Parenthood affiliate will also use the money it received to build clinics in areas where Planned Parenthood does not operate currently, Stoesz said in a statement.
“We are incredibly grateful,” Stoesz said in a news release, according to Minnesota Public Radio News. “This gift will ensure that the expert reproductive health care that is our hallmark will be provided.”
The three-state Planned Parenthood affiliate sees roughly 66,000 patients annually.
