Voters in the Czech Republic are looking to elect a billionaire, anti-establishment business mogul as their next president, a man eerily similar to President Donald Trump.
Babis is marketing himself, much like Trump did in 2016, as the candidate who can successfully fight establishment politicians and government bureaucrats that have made life so difficult for his fellow citizens, Yahoo reports. Essentially, Czech voters think that Babis, given his background in business, is in a unique position to usher the nation into a time of economic and individual prosperity.
Voters head to the ballot box Oct. 20-21 to decide their next head of state.
“He is skillful as a businessman, he could show that also running the state,” a 63-year-old Czech voter told reporters after meeting Babis at a campaign stop.
While he has some similarities to Trump, Babis sets himself apart because he has previous experience serving in government. Until his recent removal by the prime minister, Babis served as the nation’s treasurer, where he was able to bring the government into a budget surplus.
Babis is worth roughly $4.01 billion USD, up from roughly $2 billion in 2013 before he joined the government.
He largely evaded conflicts of interest allegations after he put his personal business in a trust, although some still raise doubts about whether or not he has used his government influence for his own personal benefit.
