Executive chairman of Breitbart News, Steve Bannon stepped down from the outlet he has led since 2012.

The announcement, first reported by the New York Times, comes after the former White House chief strategist came under fire when President Donald Trump attacked Bannon Friday for disparaging comments he made in a new book by author Michael Wolff. Trump released a statement the day his comments came to light, declaring that when he left the White House, Bannon “not only lost his job, he lost his mind.”

Trump then gave Bannon the nickname “sloppy Steve.”

Bannon allegedly told Wolff that Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with Russians in Trump tower on July 9, 2016, was “treasonous” in nature. Bannon also reportedly personally insulted Ivanka Trump’s intelligence in a comment to Wolff.

The White House did not accept Bannon’s apology for his comments about the president and his family to Wolff in his new book, “Fire And Fury.” Deputy White House press secretary Hogan Gidley told reporters aboard Air Force One Monday that Bannon’s comments insulting the president’s family crossed the line. “I’m proud of what the Breitbart team has accomplished in so short a period of time in building out a world-class news platform,” Bannon said in a statement on the website after stepping down.

Breitbart CEO Larry Solov praised Bannon in a statement, but did not provide a reason for his departure.

“Steve is a valued part of our legacy, and we will always be grateful for his contributions, and what he has helped us to accomplish,” Solov said.

It is unclear who will take Bannon’s spot as chairman of Breitbart.
