GOP Rep. Charlie Dent spoke out against Sen. Ron Johnson and said the idea of a secret society within the FBI is a conspiracy theory Wednesday on CNN’s “New Day.”

“I am not prone to conspiracy theories. I really am not. I wish some of my colleagues would temper their rhetoric. We Republicans have often sold ourselves as the party of law enforcement, not just the state and local level, but the federal level as well,” Dent said.

Camerota asked Dent point blank if he believed the FBI could have formed a skull and bones type secret society and Dent left open the possibility for it’s existence, but said he remains “skeptical.”

“Well, look, I guess anything is possible, but I can’t imagine there’s some grand conspiracy here. Call me skeptical, all right,” Dent said.

“These people at the FBI are very much involved with counter-terrorism operations, going out and putting their lives at risk every day, and we shouldn’t lose sight of that over the politics of this particular Russia investigation,” he continued. “I do believe that the men and women of the FBI are good, honorable, professional people. I’m sure there are some bad apples, but we have a process to deal with that. I think it’s important that we not undermine the American confidence in the Justice Department and the FBI.”

Dent also said he believes Robert Mueller will remain impartial in his investigation and thinks his handling of the Strzok-Page text message scandal has been adequate and effective.

“I have confidence in director Mueller that he is going to run a thorough, fair, professional investigation,” Dent said. “When there were problems with two of those individuals involved [Strzok and Page], he either removed them or demoted them, and so I do have confidence in this. And we shouldn’t do anything to undermine this investigation.”
