At least 70 percent of viewers had a positive reaction to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night, according to CNN and CBS.

CNN’s instant poll of people who watched the State of the Union found that 70 percent had a “very positive” or “somewhat positive” reaction to the speech. Plus, 62 percent of viewers believe that Trump is moving the country in the right direction.

CNN noted that the SOTU is more likely to be viewed by fans of the president, but the poll numbers are consistent with previous presidents’ State of the Union addresses.

“We went back to look at the State of the Union address at the beginning of a midterm election year where the president’s party was facing a lot of headwinds. Take a look at this,” CNN’s David Shelley said. “48 percent very positive reaction across the board. Barack Obama at the beginning of 2010, he had 48% very positive reaction. George W. Bush at the beginning of 2006, in his second midterms, 48 percent, very positive.”

Similarly, a CBS News poll found that 75 percent of viewers approved of Trump’s address.

Even more surprising is that 43 percent of Democrats and 72 percent of independents approved of the speech.
