Speaker Paul Ryan said during a press conference on Tuesday that Republicans “fully intend” to make their recent tax cuts permanent.

Democrats have criticized the GOP for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act because it only gives the middle class a tax cut through 2025, after which all of the individual tax cuts expire. Ryan addressed plans to extend the tax cuts past 2025, noting that there has already been legislation introduced to do so.

“Obviously these tax cuts are intended to be permanent,” Ryan said. “What we are seeing is an economy that was growing 1 – 2 percent now is heading north of 3 percent…it means people get to keep more of what they earn.”

“Tax certainty is very important to keeping this good economic growth going so obviously we believe that that’s necessary for economic growth — we fully intend to make these things permanent and that’s something we’ll be acting on later this year,” he concluded.
