Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin refused to support President Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election bid on CNN’s “New Day” Thursday, saying it was too early in the process to even talk about it.

“You know it’s way too early,” Johnson told host Chris Cuomo. “No, it isn’t. No it isn’t,” Cuomo fired back.

“Listen, I understand the kind of gotcha question you’re engaging in here. But it’s just way too early to even be talking about it,” Johnson replied.

Cuomo said he was offended Johnson thought he was trying to trap him with a gotcha question but still continued to press him.

“I’m trying to do everything I can, as I did with President Obama, to help President Trump keep this nation more prosperous, safer and more secure,” Johnson said.

“Would you at least acknowledge that it is unusual … to hear members of a party say that they are not behind a member of their party who is president,” Cuomo asked.

Johnson said he finds it unusual that members of the mainstream media would be talking about the specifics of an election more than two years before it happens.

“I’m not going to chase you because I have other things to talk about,” Cuomo replied.

“We’ve been four square about hind [Trump’s] agenda. Trying to repeal and replace ObamaCare … reducing the regulatory burden,” Johnson concluded. “We are supporting his agenda.”
