CBS Evening News labeled Monday’s Toronto van attack a “hit-and-run” in a tweet that earned them scorn and mockery from Twitter users.

The driver of the van deliberately plowed into pedestrians, killing nine and injuring 16. CBS reported that the suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Alek Minassian — but they also referred to his attack as a “hit-and-run.”

CBS had repeatedly used the phrase “hit-and-run” in earlier tweets about the incident as well.

Hit and runs usually refer to accidents where an involved party leaves the scene without identifying themselves. Twitter users called out CBS for their inappropriate use of the term.
